Even Children Can – “Beat Air Pollution” – Uganda

On June 5th 2019, BLI in partnership with Heart Stars and RocVerge in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme carried out a children’s outreach program in Kampala and Mukono.

BLI and Heart Stars visited Hill Preparatory School in Naguru where they worked with children from primary three to four and educated them about how they could “beat air pollution”. The outreach included getting the children to read “Anna’s Forest” a comic developed by Comics Uniting Nations and IUCN which served to boost their reading and story-telling skills. Charlotte Kalanzi the founder of Heart Stars also taught the children the “Environment Song” much to their delight and the children got to sing and dance to the song and even win prizes at the end.

Stella, one of the volunteers from BLI says; “I was glad to be part of the event at Hill preparatory school as one of the members from BLI . It was indeed amazing to interact with children as our theme was “Even children can beat Air Pollution” they show cased their knowledge and understanding of Air Pollution. The activities instilled in the children more knowledge about environmental conservation and the dangers that might ensue  if mother earth is not protected. As children they took home what they learnt and also promised to empower their schoolmates, friends and parents on how to protect mother Earth and beat Air Pollution in their homes and the surrounding community. I am looking forward to next year’s World Environment Day event and to keep fighting the cause in my community.”

As prizes for their participation and activity in the games and quizzes, the best performing children got to take home t-shirts generously donated by Heart Stars as well as chocolates and the comic was donated to the school. We thank RocVerge for participating with us, assisting with the printing of branded t-shirts, and holding their own successful outreach in Mukono.
